Rokinon 35mm F/1.4 AS UMC Wide Angle Lens for Nikon with Automatic Chip RK35MAF-N Reviews
32 of 35 people found the following review helpful Fantastic for DSLR Video, July 18, 2011 This review is from: Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 Lens for Canon Cameras (Electronics) I picked up the Rokinon (Samyang) 35mm f/1.4 lens for EOS mount cameras as soon as it was available, anticipating high demand. It has been tested on several review sites to be comparable to Canon's phenomenal 35mm f/1.4 L lens, which is one of the "essentials" for pro photographers. The Rokinon lens is heavy, well built, very sharp, almost no distortion, and looks professional. It has a long focus throw, making it much easier to use for DSLR videography. It works on EF and EF-S bodies, so it's safe if you move up from APS-C to full frame. On a Canon 7D or 60D it's a 56mm-equivalent lens, standard focal length. On a full frame body it is a medium-wide angle that is the classic focal length for photojournalism. The focus ring is very smooth, and the manual aperture ring is great if you're used to a pro video camera and need a quick aperture adjustment on the fly. The Duclos lens company in California will de-click the manual aperture ring for $60.00 plus tax plus shipping there and... Read more
15 of 15 people found the following review helpful Great 35mm lens regardless of price!, September 12, 2011 Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 Lens for Canon Cameras (Electronics) Pros:
+ Great contrast and sharpness throughout the aperture range, as long as you can get your images in focus!
+ Better edge sharpness than any competing lens when used on a full frame (including Canon 35mm L -- Canon 35mm L has slightly better center sharpness wide open.)
+ Great value.
+ Great lens for video.
Cons:
- Manual focus takes practice. Live view works great, but requires some getting used to.
- I would not recommend relying on the distance gauge for focusing. On Samyang/Rokinon lenses, this has been known to be notoriously inaccurate.
When comparing this to other lenses, it is important to consider the focal length being covered here. It is quite remarkable to find a 35mm lens with such a great resolution profile at any price point.
With this lens, part of the price you pay is in the form of convenience. If you are willing to give up the convenience of electronic control of focus, and the diaphragm, and... Read more
11 of 11 people found the following review helpful Exceeded expectations!, June 11, 2011 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 Lens for Sony Cameras (Electronics) Just received this lens and, thus far, I'm very impressed. As used on my Sony a900, I find it plenty sharp wide open and, unlike the Rokinon 85 1.4 lens I once owned, just as sharp for distant subject matter as it is for closer subject matter. In fact, once stopped down to 5.6 to 8, this lens is as useful for landscapes as it is for portraits. I also find the color and contrast to be much superior to the Rokinon 85 1.4 which I thought tended to render contrast a little too soft with very muted color.
While I don't find it heavy for such a fast moderate wide angle, be aware that it is physically a very large lens. It almost looks like a fast zoom lens when mounted! Nitpicking, there is a little barrel distortion and quite a bit of vignetting. Chromatic aberrations are very well corrected (sometimes a tiny bit may be noticeable wide open) and the bokeh is generally gorgeous. Build quality seems a step up from the Rokinon 85 1.4. Focus ring is smoother to operate as... Read more
