Best lens I have used in 30 years of photography, September 25, 2011 Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Sony SAL-24F20Z 24mm f/2.0 A-mount Wide Angle Lens (Electronics) I was not expecting as much as I received with this lens. I had used the 24mm length on a Nikon film camera in the 80's and could never really "get it" with the length.
When I purchased this lens I was buying provisionally to see if I had the same difficulties as with Nikon's 24mm (24mm f/2.8) I previously owned. From the first photo session with the Sony Zeiss I was blown away. Within my first 100 or so shots with this lens, I came to view it as my favorite lens of all. Ever - and I have owned Pentax FA Limited, Canon L, Voigtlander SL, Contax G Zeiss, and the Nikon.
The optical quality becomes very obvious immediately. The color and scene rendition are absolutely gorgeous. The way it "draws" is magical. All of the usual optical lens weaknesses are well controlled in this lens. It is a lens that is so good it feels like you are relatively cheating regarding resulting keepers.

11 of 14 people found the following review helpful Excellent wide-angle prime lens from Sony/Zeiss, November 16, 2010 Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Sony SAL-24F20Z 24mm f/2.0 A-mount Wide Angle Lens (Electronics) The Sony/Zeiss 24/2 lens is small and lightweight when compared to the other Carl Zeiss lenses for Sony, and provides excellent sharpness in the center and the corners of a full-frame image. Relative to the Sony/Zeiss 16-35/2.8 lens, I find its colors to be a bit cooler. Compared to the Minolta 24/2.8 lens, the Sony/Zeiss 24/2 is much sharper and provides better contrast. An informative comparison of these three lenses, as well as to the Minolta 17-35/3.5G, may be found at the artaphot dot ch site.

It is a rare lens has the degree of resolution, color, bouquet, contrast, and overall performance that this lens has. I was in a bind whether to buy the 16 to 35 zoom lens for my Sony Alpha 850, and after acquiring the 24 mm lens I believe I made the right decision. More light, closer focusing distance, and I believe a slight edge in performance that makes a positive difference for me, even assuming the limitations of a fix lens contrary to a zoom.
